Typography Sketchbooks

A couple of years ago I was asked by the inimitable Steven Heller if I'd like to contribute to one of his up-and-coming publications, 'Typography Sketchbooks'. It so happened that around this time (late 2009) I was starting to really get going with hand-lettering, having been mainly digital up until then. What you see in the book are some of my very first attempts. I sometimes find it hard to stomach seeing old work popping up, I imagine it's the same for most, and these pieces are especially formative and revealing. However, we all have to start somewhere and sometimes taking a long hard look at where you've come from can help you see where you are with greater clarity. Also, it can help you understand that practice, patience, and determination are the key to developing skills.

The book is a treat for anyone interested in seeing how different artists develop their work or play with letterforms. I recommend you pick up a copy.

New Ornamental Type

POSTED BY TOM

I was fortunate enough to be asked to contribute to New Ornamental Type by the legend Steve Heller and Gail Anderson. My Inspiring Words Series was given the full-page treatment. It’s a real honour to be amongst some wonderful work. Here's a link if you fancy getting it. It’s a cracking book and I’m not just saying that because I’m in it.

AOI Images 33

Wawwhoo, it's finally here. The most prestigious Illustration book in the country was delivered to my door step the other day. I'm super happy to announce my piece 'Extrovert' was selected and can currently be seen in all its glory in the book and at the AOI exhibition. Get yourself down to London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle if you fancy checking it out. I'm gutted to say I missed the opening night due to work commitments but I'm hoping to get down to the show soon. I'll take some pics and post at a later date. This is one of my career goals nailed now anyway. Better get my skates on and submit some work for next years edition!

Guess what? Rotovision's, Font: classic typefaces for contemporary graphic design has landed and is available in bookshops. Why am I sharing this? Well, other than it being a wonderful, weighty read, it includes the Ginger Monkey inspiring word series! Check it out if you can, it's packed full of some great designs and structured as a typographic reference book with examples of the type in use.
